History of the Bonsai

Bonsai is the art of growing small trees that look like full sized trees in nature. It started in China over a thousand years ago where it was called “penjing.” The idea was to create miniature landscapes in pots capturing the beauty of nature in a small space.

The practice spread to Japan around the 12th century where it evolved into what we now call bonsai. In Japan it became more focused on growing single trees shaped carefully over time to look like mature natural trees but in miniature form.

Bonsai is not about forcing a tree to stay small it is about guiding and caring for it so it grows slowly and beautifully over many years. It takes patience time and attention to detail.

Today bonsai is practiced all over the world. Each tree tells its own story shaped by the hands of the grower and the environment it lives in. It is an art form that connects people to nature and teaches patience and care.

Our History

We didn’t start this as a business. My uncle’s been growing bonsai trees in his backyard in California for years. It’s just something he’s always done quietly, consistently, and with a lot of care.

We started bringing them out here because people kept asking where we got ours. They’re not mass produced, each one’s been treated, trimmed, and cared for by someone in our family.

There’s no factory or warehouse behind this.. just a backyard, a lot of patience, and someone who genuinely enjoys doing it right.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do they need a lot of care?

They need consistent care, but not every day. Just pay attention to watering and light. They're not hard, but you can’t ignore them.

How often do I water it?

When the top of the soil feels dry.

Usually every day in the summer when they are kept in the desert, during the winter, they can go about 2-3 days between waterings.

Can I keep it indoors?

Some types can handle indoors near bright windows, but most do better outside with fresh air and natural light.

You can keep your indoors but make sure to give it adequte sunlight and fresh air daily.

Do I need to trim/prune it?

Major pruning is best done in late winter to early spring, just before the tree begins its active growth. This timing helps the bonsai recover quickly and maintain its shape.

Light pruning can be done throughout the growing season to encourage healthy growth.

Always use clean, sharp tools and prune carefully to avoid stressing your tree.

Can I shape my bonsai?

Yes! Shaping your bonsai is a key part of the art. You can use pruning, wiring, and careful trimming to guide your bonsai’s growth and create its desired form.

Just remember to be patient; bonsai shaping takes time and care. Always use proper tools and techniques to avoid damaging your tree.

Will it grow bigger?

It grows slowly, and can live up to 100's of years, but normally it stays small because of how it’s trimmed and kept in a small pot.

It it highly recommended to repot/re-soil every 2 1/2 years.
